Germination 7 degree C. Successful sowing
The best way to grow broccoli is by sowing, in soil previously enriched with compost, manure or an amendment such as manure and algae. This fertilization must take place several weeks before sowing, as soon as the soil is malleable.
- For a sowing directly into the ground we will wait for the end of any risk of frost, May or June .
- Broadcast sow and lightly bury the seeds.
- Tamp lightly then water in a fine rain.
- Thin out to 10 cm when the broccoli have formed a few leaves
As soon as the plants have minimum 3 to 4 leaves , transplant directly in place while protecting your culture with an anti-insect net.
- Broccoli is transplanted every 40 cm.
This spacing is necessary to allow plants room to grow. - Transplant into well plowed soil and amend
- Water your broccoli regularly but moderately in fine rain so as to maintain good humidity.
Watering the broccoli :
To grow well, broccoli needs regular watering to keep the soil moist.
- Water without wetting the foliage too much to avoid fungus
- Mulch the base of your broccoli to maintain moisture in the soil
- Hoe regularly to facilitate the passage of water in the soil and avoid weeds
Harvest the broccoli :
Harvest broccoli when the main head is well formed and compact.
- You have to harvest the broccoli before the flowers open (the surface then turns yellow, but flowers are good too, they taste like honey)
- Cut about 5cm below the head to allow your broccoli to continue growing.
- Leave your broccoli in place because they will continue to give delicious little florets.
